Group Therapy

2. White – Intro blurb

There is something powerful about realizing you are not the only one going through hard things. Group therapy brings people together who are facing similar challenges so they can share, learn, and support each other in a guided, safe space. Groups are not about putting anyone on the spot. They are about connection, learning practical tools, and walking away knowing you are not alone.

3. Bold – Why group therapy helps

Many people assume therapy has to be one-on-one, but groups can offer something uniquely valuable. When you sit with others who “get it,” you gain perspective, encouragement, and new strategies. Hearing how others cope can spark ideas, and sharing your own experiences can build confidence.

Group therapy can be especially supportive if you are:

  • Feeling isolated in your struggles

  • Wanting to practise new skills with guidance and encouragement

  • Looking for affordable and accessible therapy options

  • Interested in learning from different perspectives

  • Hoping to strengthen confidence in social or relational settings

Groups are designed with structure, focus, and clear guidelines to make sure everyone feels respected and supported.

4. White – How group therapy builds skills and connection

In group therapy, participants explore topics and practise tools in a safe, structured setting. Groups may include guided discussion, skill-building activities, and reflection exercises. The goal is not just to learn strategies, but to feel supported by others who understand.

My approach is:

  • Respectful: everyone’s voice matters and sharing is always by choice

  • Strengths-based: highlighting what each participant brings to the group

  • Trauma-informed: creating an environment of safety, care, and trust

  • Collaborative: balancing guidance with space for peer support and shared learning

5. Bold – What to expect in the process

Before joining, participants complete an intake form to ensure the group is a good fit. At the first session, we review group guidelines and set expectations together. Each group has a clear focus — whether that is managing anxiety, building coping skills, or navigating life transitions. Sessions typically involve education, practical strategies, and space for sharing.

Group therapy may involve:

  • Learning new coping strategies

  • Practising tools for emotional regulation

  • Engaging in structured discussions and activities

  • Supporting others while also feeling supported yourself

You can expect a respectful, non-judgmental atmosphere where participation is encouraged but never forced.

6. White – Outcomes you might notice

Group therapy often helps participants feel less alone and more hopeful. Over time, you may notice stronger coping skills, increased self-awareness, and greater confidence in handling challenges. Many people also describe feeling comforted by peer support and inspired by the progress of others in the group. The goal is to leave each session with practical strategies and a sense of connection that lasts beyond the group.

7. Bold – Practical details

Groups run at set times and typically meet once a week for a series of sessions. Each session is 90 minutes and takes place in person at Little Tree Psychology in Sherwood Park. Some groups are open (ongoing) while others are closed (same members throughout). Details on current or upcoming groups will be listed on this page or shared during consultation.
